On 15th November 2017, aged just 21, Lil Peep was found unresponsive on his tour bus and later was pronounced dead from an accidental overdose.
Today would’ve been Peep’s 25th birthday.
Lil Peep gave a voice to a generation of misfits, putting into words everything they wanted to say but couldn’t. He bought together genres, and created a new wave of music known as ’emo trap’. From posting songs on SoundCloud to a headline sold-out tour just two years later, Peep’s rise was like a flash of lightning; bold, quick and beautiful, unpredictable and then suddenly gone.
No one should be creating their legacy at 21. Peep didn’t want to die, didn’t choose to die, and those around him had seemingly forgotten that amongst all his fame and success, he was still just a kid from Long Beach, New York. He wasn’t invincible.
In the years since his passing, his mother, Liza Womack, has done an incredible job of keeping Peep’s name alive, with countless releases, albums, and the documentary “Everybody’s, Everything”. Fans are still discovering his music, falling in love, and celebrating his name all around the world. His short-lived life had a tragic ending, but his name will live on forever.
Rest In Peace Gustav Elijah Åhr.
We all wish you were still here.
