Following a sold-out run of dates with Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes and Ho99o9, Cleopatrick hit the London stage once again at Electrowerkz with the support of their friends in Ready The Prince and The Small Black Flowers. Hailing from the small town of Cobourg, Ontario, the Canadian outfit funnels the power of pure, unadulterated rock through a single guitar, a set of drums and one hell of a vocal.
The first band to emerge on the extremely foggy stage were The Small Black Flowers. Making their live debut as the night’s opener, the Kingston-upon-Thames based band became comfortable on stage fast, merging heavy rock foundations with blues guitar riffs. You could tell the band was ecstatic to finally get their music out there, having released just one single so far, “Static High”.
Next up was Ready The Prince. These guys are a Cleopatrick tour staple, jumping the pond together for a second time, alongside conquering the stateside. The band did not mess about, heading into their set with both explosive power provided by the lead singer/bassist and the drummer and the melodic contrast set by the band’s guitarist. Ready The Prince near-instantly had the room in their grasp. It didn’t take long to get the crowd moving, and by the end of the set, you could mistake the night for a Ready The Prince gig. The band finished with a new song that was easily the heaviest they played but was welcomed by the fans as an instant classic.
Cleopatrick got on stage next and did what they do best. The duo hit things off with “Daphne Did It”, a cut from their second EP. This got the set off to an energetic start with the crowd set in motion. Soon enough, the boys from Ready The Prince joined the crowd in the pits, directing the fans through the new, unreleased tracks. The atmosphere was electric yet very intimate, blurring the lines between performer and fan. As the set progressed, the songs jumped from well known to unreleased, yet the new ones didn’t suffer from being unfamiliar. Quite opposite, the new songs were met with an even more enthusiastic reaction.
Particularly the song Luke (lead singer/guitarist) described as being about “getting your song stolen.” Performed with visceral emotion, the crowd’s response was just as raw.
The band’s bigger hits such as “Youth” and “Hometown” were met with the crowd singing every word back at the two artists, which must’ve been appreciated by Luke, who was suffering from illness all tour. With three songs left, the band announced that they have brought a “special guest” with them. Instant guess was Frank Carter, as the guys just came off tour with his band. After a short break both Cleopatrick and Ready The Prince hit the stage, announcing Julian Casablancas of The Strokes. The Strokes were down to perform in Paris the next day. Could it be…
No, it couldn’t. Julian Casablancas was actually Jake the Tour Manager in shiny shades performing a rendition of “Reptilia”. But the fans couldn’t care less, enjoying Cleopatrick’s and Ready The Prince’s performance of the indie classic, and that stands as the best testimony for the bands. Be sure to catch Cleopatrick in a small venue while you can.
